Doing the Impossible!

“As they approached, Jesus said, ‘Now here is a genuine son of Israel – a man of complete integrity.’ ‘How do you know about me?’ Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, ‘I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.’ Then Nathanael exclaimed, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God – the King of Israel!’ Jesus asked him, ‘Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.’ Then He said, ‘I tell you the truth, you will see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.’” (John 1:47-51 NLT)

The greatest miracle ever known to man is the new birth of a person whose sins have been forgiven and who has been given new life by the Spirit of God through Christ alone by faith alone. The reality is, without the Lord Jesus we are alive physically, but dead in our trespasses and sin. In other words, we are dead men walking! We’re alive physically, but dead spiritually. Why is that important?

Because at our core, we’re spiritual beings in a physical body. Our body will one day die and decay, going back to the dust from which it came, but our spirit, the essence of who we are, will live for all eternity… somewhere! And that “somewhere” on many levels defines why we have life in the first place.

Life in Christ Jesus opens for us the ability to do what otherwise would be humanly impossible. How so? Living above sin, doing life without yielding to the dictates of the flesh, is impossible without the empowering presence of God’s Spirit residing within us. How do I know that? Because Hebrews 11:6 says: “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.”

Those who open their hearts to the Lord, confessing their faith and trust in Him, will be filled by God’s Spirit who is the Author of miracles and the One who uses us as His vehicles for living miraculously. Frank Gaebelein understood this as reflected in what he wrote: “The more we are filled with the Holy Spirit, the more we shall glorify the Lord Jesus.”

Steven Furtick added another dimension to this idea when he wrote: “Accomplishing the impossible is all about seeing the invisible.” As the angel explained to the virgin Mary when she asked how she, a virgin could bear a child, he explained that it would happen by an act of God, then he told her about her relative Elizabeth, far beyond the age to bear a child, was now in her sixth month. Then he said: “For nothing is impossible for God.”

Impossible is not a term in God’s vocabulary, and it shouldn’t be in the vocabulary of any child of God. Being a child of God is impossible for man, but possible for God. Living a holy life is impossible for man but enabled by the Spirit of the living God. Fulfilling God’s eternal purposes on earth is impossible for man but is a daily reality for anyone filled and empowered by the Spirit of the only true and living God.

Helping someone open their heart, mind and life to the living God is humanly impossible without the underlying leadership of God’s Spirit, released in and through believing prayer. Anyone who doesn’t believe in the impossible isn’t a child of God, because children of God are living, breathing, walking, talking examples of what miracles really look like.
