“Do not let sin control the way you live, do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.” (Romans 6:12-13 NLT)
Nearly fifty years ago Bob Dylan wrote and performed a song entitled “Gotta Serve Somebody”, the lyrics of which say: “It may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you’re gonna serve somebody.” This song was part of his album Slow Train Coming, which marked the beginning of the “Gospel” period of his career after he became a born-again Christian (Wikipedia+1).
You don’t have to be a Bob Dylan fan to understand the truth of what he wrote, because there are only two options in this life – Jesus or the devil, and we’re serving one or the other whether we choose to believe it or not. “So, how do I know who I’m serving?” Are you dead or alive? Has your spirit, the essence of who you are, been given life through the Spirit of God by faith in the living Christ, or are you still dead in your trespasses and sins?
It’s not rocket science, you’ve either made the decision to walk with Jesus or you’re still walking in your sin, you can’t have it both ways. Jesus is your Lord or Satan is still ruling your decisions. Paul says in the verse above: “give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life.” So, the only question to answer is: “Have you done that? Have you given yourself completely to Jesus?”

“Wait,” you may be thinking. “The verse says ‘give yourselves completely to God’, but you said I should give myself to Jesus. Isn’t Jesus God’s Son?” Yes, He is, but He’s also God, the Son, God poured into human flesh in the person of Jesus. How do I know that? Because John 1:1-5 says: “In the beginning the Word (Jesus) already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. Got created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
If you’ve opened your life to Jesus and invited Him to forgive your sins and fill your life, you’ve been born again of the Spirit of God and are alive in Christ; otherwise, you’re still a walking dead person struggling in the energy of the flesh to exist until your body dies and you’re eternally separated from your only hope of eternal life in heaven. Why must you die without Christ when such an opportunity for life exists?
Eternal life in Jesus doesn’t begin when we die, it begins the moment we open our heart and life to Him by faith. Jesus said in John 5:24: “I tell you the truth, those who listen to My message and believe in God who sent Me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.” Only in this life do we have a choice. Once we die, if we haven’t willfully chosen to give ourselves to the Lord Jesus, by default, we’re choosing death and hell. No decision IS a vitally wrong decision! Please don’t make that mistake!
